6.4 Magnitude Tremor Hits Indonesia's Tourist Hotspot, 14 Killed

  • A powerful earthquake of 6.4 magnitude hit Indonesia’s central island of Lombok (a popular tourist destination) at 7am local time on Sunday. Reports say at least 14 people are killed and over 160 are injured. Officials also say thousands of homes are damaged by the earthquake. The US Geological Survey reportedly said that the devastating earthquake’s epicenter is located 31 miles or 50 km away in the north-east direction from northern Lombok’s Mataram city. This earthquake was followed by over sixty smaller tremors. A spokesperson for Indonesia’s disaster management agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, told media that most casualties took place because of the falling concrete blocks and debris.
