52 rescued from Antarctic ship stranded since Christmas Eve

  • Scientists and 52 tourists have finally been rescued after being trapped in Antarctic since Christmas Eve.

AP reports that a Chinese helicopter has taken people to the Aurora australis ship in batches, who will be brought to Tasmania by mid-Jan. The BBC noted that 22 of the ship's crew members will stay on board the vessel.

"We've made it to the Aurora australis safe & sound," the expedition leader tweeted. "A huge thanks to the Chinese & @AusAntarctic for all their hard work!"

Several failed attempts were made before this one, including one by a Chinese icebreaker which got stuck in the ice itself.
