At least 30 Japanese hikers are feared dead after they were trapped on the slopes surrounding Mount Ontake following its sudden eruption on Saturday.
Police and armed forces are searching for other survivors as conflicting reports emerged about missing hikers.
The volcanic eruption around Saturday noon led to dozens of injuries as people scrambled for safety amid an ash pile-up. Hundreds of people who were initially stranded managed to climb down to safety but more than 30 hikers could not escape in time, reports said.
