30 former Chilean political prisoners compensated

  • A court in Chile has told the state to pay about $7.5 million to 30 former political prisoners as compensation, according to media reports.

The prisoners, including ministers and political leaders, were held captive on an isolated island in the south at time of Augusto Pinochet’s military rule.

They were held in Tierra del Fuego on Dawson island for two years in the 1970s.

The justice ministry said in a statement that the prisoners suffered "immeasurable moral injury."
