Twinkies selling for $5,000 on eBay

  • Just days after Twinkie-maker Hostess announced plans to shut shop, the popular American cream-filled sponge cakes are being sold on the Internet for up to $5,000.

The retail price for a box of 10 Twinkies is roughly $5.

Hours after Hostess made the announcement, people flocked to stores to buy boxes of the cakes and their sibling snacks, Ding Dongs, Ho Hos and Zingers.

On Friday, Hostess Brands said a strike by the bakers union had forced it to close all operations and sell all assets resulting in the loss of 18,500 jobs.

The firm has been trouble over recent years, emerging from bankruptcy protection in 2009 only to file again in January 2012.

The shutdown will result in the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centres and 570 bakery outlet stores.

The company is also behind the Wonder and Merita bread brands along with Drake’s cakes.

Hostess Brands was set up in 1930 and reported revenues of $2 billion last year.
