Turkey lifts restrictions on Twitter, Facebook

  • Restrictions on social media in Turkey are being lifted as the sites (Twitter and Facebook) start following a court directive to stop sharing pictures depicting a prosecutor held at gunpoint.

The prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz, who was held hostage by the banned far-left DHKP-C group, was later killed when special forces attempted to end the siege.

Reports say that while Twitter and Facebook no longer face blocks, YouTube still faces restrictions.

Authorities described Kiraz’s images as “propaganda” against the government.
