Top apps of 2012: Angry Birds, Instagram and Facebook

  • Angry Birds, Instagram and Facebook were once again the most downloaded apps of the year.

Consumers spent an average of two hours a day using mobile applications in 2012, a rise of 35 percent compared to last year, according to analytics firm Flurry.

Categories such as social networking, media and entertainment, photo editing and games continued to dominate consumer interest.

YouTube and Angry Birds were the top free and paid apps respectively at Apple's App Store.

The game Draw Something for iPhone and Android also gained widespread popularity following its release in February. It is the second most downloaded paid app of the year on Android and Apple devices.
