Obama campaign sees Facebook 'likes' surge

  • U.S. President Barack Obama has seen his Facebook ‘likes’ soar on the back of a coordinated social media campaign.

    His team has paid for ‘Sponsored Stories’ to appear in some users' Facebook news feeds.

    Obama's page is reported to have received more than one million ‘likes’ in a single day, compared with around 30,000 a day in earlier weeks.

    However, political commentators have warned the approach could dissuade voters.

    Both Obama and his Republican rival Mitt Romney have ramped up their campaign efforts on social media sites in recent weeks.

    Along with Facebook, the opponents have a presence on Twitter and picture-sharing networks Pinterest and Instagram.

    In 2008, Obama's campaign was hailed for its innovative use of social media, especially in engaging the youth demographic.
