Man drove 3M miles in 1996 Volvo

  • Irv Gordon has set a new record by driving his 1966 Volvo P1800 three million miles as of Sept. 17. This marks the highest mileage driven by a single driver in a vehicle.

Gordon, 74, hit the milestone in Alaska and the only state he has never visited in his vehicle is Hawaii. "I never had a goal to get to one million, to two million," he said. "I just enjoyed driving and experiencing life through my Volvo."

Some fascinating numbers are attached to the car, which has been in 11 accidents in a span of 47 years. It has visited nine countries and has been to 800 Waffle Houses. The Volvo has even driven in 105-degrees in Kansas City.

Gordon makes sure to keep his car in top condition and said his road trips have resulted in him making friends all over the country. "If I stop for gas some place or I stop for a cup of coffee, people will pull up next to me and ask about the car."

He has also been given a new vehicle for each of his major milestones- one million and two million.
