Information Technology Act: Indian court strikes down 'arrest' law

  • India’s apex court has struck down a law that allowed authorities to arrest people for comments on websites including social networks.

The Supreme Court ruled that Section 66A of the IT Act was unconstitutional.

Several arrests have been made in recent years in India for comments on networks like Twitter and Facebook under the controversial law, drawing criticism from activists.

A two-judge bench delivered the order following petitions filed by rights groups and others.
