India restricts websites and bulk SMS
August 20 , 2012
The Indian government has asked Internet service providers to restrict access to several websites, as well as halt bulk SMS messaging for two weeks.
According to officials, more than 150 websites were blocked over the weekend after people received SMS texts and online messages regarding the reprisal of recent violence in northeastern Assam state between Muslims and indigenous communities.
India's Ministry of IT and Communications has also notified websites such as YouTube and Facebook to remove any "inflammatory and hateful content" aimed at people from northeastern India.
