'Great Cannon' is China's new cyber weapon, say researchers

  • Researchers have coined the term “Great Canon” to describe China’s use of a new cyber censorship tool.

Its first effective use is believed to have happened last month when GitHub, the coding site, was disrupted for several days using a method of attack known as distributed denial of service (DDoS), reports said.

In this case, a section of the New York Times and GreatFire.org, an anti-censorship group, were the apparent targets of the attack, the Toronto-based researchers say.
