Google Transparency Report Shows Rise In Surveillance

Google released its Transparency Report for the last six months of 2012. The report shows that the search giant had received 21,389 requests for information from governments and law enforcement agencies. This is an increase in 17% from the same period in 2011 and over 71% from the same period in 2009. American governmental agencies seem to have made the most such requests and Google complied with 88% of these 8,438 applications. India came next with 2,431 such applications. The UK had made 1,458 requests and about 70% information was provided. All of Turkey’s 149 requests and Hungary’s 95 requests were turned down by Google.
