FBI activating microphones in Android smartphones
August 4 , 2013
The FBI is expanding the use of tools used to gather information on suspects. Although, federal agencies haven't revealed much information on the topic, new details about the hacking tools have been revealed. People familiar with the FBI programs said the use of hacking tools has increased under court orders and agents use them to keep up with suspects who use communications technology.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation develops these tools internally and purchases some from the private sector as well. The technology is capable of activating the microphones in phones in order to record conversations. The same can be done in laptops without letting the users know. This practice is common in cases that involve organized crime, child pornography or counterterrorism.
The Bureau barely discloses its techniques in public and has been working on hacking tools for more than a decade.
