Commercial planes vulnerable to hack attacks, warns US report

  • Large numbers of commercial aircraft are potentially vulnerable to hack attacks targeting their onboard computer systems, and someone could even remotely take over the planes, a new US report has warned.

According to the report by the government accountability office, modern technologies such as IP connectivity that are used in aircraft systems today, create the possibility of "unauthorized" individuals “access[ing] and compromis[ing] aircraft avionics systems.”

Theoretically, it is possible for a person with a laptop on the plane or on the ground to commandeer the aircraft or infect the flight controls with a virus, the report said.
