US Open: Flavia Pennetta beats Roberta Vinci in all-Italian final

  • Flavia Pennetta defeated her childhood friend Roberta Vinci in an all-Italian US Open final to win her first Grand Slam.

The 26th seed won 7-6 (7-4) 6-2, becoming only the second Italian woman to clinch one of the majors.

After her famous victory, Pennetta, 33, announced that she was retiring from tennis. However, she clarified that she would continue to play for the remainder of the season.

Vinci had earlier caused the biggest upset of the tournament by defeating world number one Serena Williams in the semi-finals.
