Spyridon Gianniotis wins the 10-km open water event

  • Greece's Gianniotis had missed a medal last year at the Olympics but he made up for it this year by winning the men's 10-km open water event at the world championships on Monday, as reported by Euronews. Germany's five time world champion, was second to finish.

The Greek athlete said that he had never felt like he did during the last 50 meters of the race. "My hands were shaking," he said.

Gianniotis mentioned that he had won the race after 3.5 months of training and he dedicated the victory to his fellow countrymen as well as to Barcelona.

The 10-km open water event for women is scheduled for Tuesday.
