South Africa set to name soccer coach
June 30 , 2012
The new coach of South Africa’s soccer team, known as Bafana Bafana, is due to be announced at 1400 GMT.
The choice is between former national captain Steve Komphela and veteran coach Gordon Igesund.
The appointee will have just seven months to prepare for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, which South Africa will host next January.
Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the last two Nations Cups and despite contesting the 2008 edition, their last win came when beating Benin in 2004.
Bafana Bafana did manage to win a match at the 2010 World Cup, beating France in the group stages, as South Africa hosted the finals.
Local coach Pitso Mosimane took charge of the side following the tournament but was axed earlier this month after failing to beat Ethiopia in a World Cup qualifier.
