Serena Williams beats Maria Sharapova to capture record sixth Miami title

  • World number one Serena Williams captured her record sixth Miami title after beating Russia’s Maria Sharapova 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday.

Williams is now only the fourth woman in the Open era to win the same WTA tournament six times, after Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Steffi Graf.

Second-ranked Sharapova has now lost to Williams in their last 11 meetings. She has not defeated the American since her two victories in 2004.

The match was Sharapova's fifth final at Key Biscayne and her fifth defeat.

Williams’ victory in Miami marks her 48th career title.
