New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera announces retirement

  • New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera revealed on Saturday that the 2013 season would be his last.

Rivera, the sport’s all-time saves leader with 608, made the announcement with his family by his side at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Florida.

The 43-year-old right-hander added he would have retired after the 2012 season had he not suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in early May.

He was hurt during batting practice before a game and missed the remainder of the season.
