Russian Athlete Mariya Savinova Banned until 2019

  • London 2012 gold medalist Mariya Savinova of Russia has been banned until 2019 and stripped of her 800m title after she was found being involved in doping. She has been given 45 days to appeal against the decision of her ban.

Savinova had defeated South Africa's Caster Semenya into second at the London Olympics 2012. She also beat Britain's Jenny Meadows and won bronze at the 2010 European Championships. Now both Semenya and Meadows can reportedly upgrade their medals

The 800m silver from the 2013 Worlds has also been taken from her.

The IAAF brought the case against Savinova, which was based upon her biological passport. Reports say that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has used the passport to pass its decision.
