Manchester United defeated in opening game of EPL
August 17 , 2014
Manchester United fans were disappointed as their team lost 2-1 to Swansea City at Old Trafford on Saturday 16 August, in the opening match of this year’s English Premier League (EPL).
Manchester United, captained by Wayne Rooney and coached by Louis Van Gaal, was expected to win their opening game in front of a home crowd. However, two goals by Ki Sung Yueng and Gylfi Sigurdsson of Swansea City resulted in the visiting team taking the lead. Swansea manager Gary Monk said his team had been working hard on their defense and there were pleasing signs in how the team had stuck together.
Wayne Rooney scored for Manchester United, but overall the team did not perform well. Manchester United coach Van Gaal said "We didn't reach the level we can play at. That is disappointing because we have done it much better and when you cannot do it in your first home match that is disappointing, especially for the fans."
Manchester United had a poor season in the EPL last year, finishing seventh, their lowest position in EPL history, after which coach Van Gall was brought in to help improve their performance.
