March 8 , 2015
Australia defeated Sri Lanka by 64 runs in a high-scoring Pool A World Cup match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Glenn Maxwell smashed the second-fastest World Cup century and Michael Clarke, Steven Smith and Shane Watson scored fifties as Australia put on a formidable 376/9.
Kumar Sangakkara led Sri Lanka’s counter-attack with a masterly 104, but ultimately anything above 350 was always going to be a very difficult total to chase, and the Sri Lankan challenge ended at 312 for 9 in 46.2 overs (LD Chandimal was retired hurt).
