Australian Open 2013: Federer and Serena ease into third round

  • Roger Federer and Serena Williams eased into the next round of the Australian Open as second-round play wrapped up on Thursday.

    Federer dismissed Russian veteran Nikolay Davydenko 6-3 6-4 6-4. Federer, who is chasing an 18th major title, will next face Bernard Tomic.

    Other winners on the men’s side included two-time runner up Andy Murray, who defeated Joao Sousa 6-2 6-2 6-4. Former finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Japan's Go Soeda 6-3 7-6 6-3 and was joined in the third round by fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who defeated Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-3 6-2 6-2.

    Williams, a 15-time major titlist, beat Garbine Muguruza 6-2 6-0 while women's defending champion and world number one Victoria Azarenka recorded a 6-1 6-0 win against Eleni Daniilidou. In other matches, Britain's Laura Robson secured a 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 win over former Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova.
