American Athletics Championships: Justin Gatlin clocks 19.57 secs to win 200m

  • American sprinter Justin Gatlin won the 200m American Athletics Championships final, clocking a time of 19.57 seconds – the fifth fastest in history.

He finished ahead of Isiah Young and Wallace Spearmon. Gatlin, 33, who has been a controversial figure in the sport after serving two doping bans, bettered his time of 19.68 seconds set in May.

He has also run this year’s fastest 100m, clocking 9.74 seconds.

In the August World Championships in Beijing, Gatlin will face a tough challenge from Usain Bolt, who holds the world record in both the 100m and 200m.
