US singer Jack Ely, best known for 1960-hit 'Louie Louie', dies at 71

  • Jack Ely, the American singer best remembered for the hit ‘Louie Louie’, has passed away. He was 71.

    The lead singer of the band Kingsmen, Ely died in Redmond, Oregon following a long illness, reports said.

    The FBI had probed his famous 1960 number on suspicion of obscenity. ‘Louie Louie’ is about a man who wants to return to Jamaica to his sweetheart, and Ely's peculiar rendition of it made it a huge success.
