The Hobbit breaks U.S. box office records for December

  • The first film in the Hobbit franchise has set a new record for December, making $84.8 million in its opening weekend at the American box office.

    Takings from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey surpassed the $72.7 million U.S. debut of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, director Peter Jackson's previous best opening in December 2003.

    In second place was the animated family film Rise of the Guardians with $7.4 million while Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, made $7.2 million to come in third place.
