The Great Gatsby opens 66th Cannes Film Festival

  • The 66th Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday evening with a screening of The Great Gatsby.

    Australian director Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation of F. Scott Fitgerald's iconic Jazz Age novel stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan.

    The screening was followed by a star-studded reception and included members of the A-list jury headed by award winning director Steven Spielberg, actress Nicole Kidman and Life of Pi director Ang Lee.

    Highlights of Cannes 2013 include the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis and a biopic on Liberace by Steven Soderbergh starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.

    Around 20 films will also compete for the top prize, the Palme d'Or.
