The Avengers surpasses $1.5 billion mark

The Avengers has passed the $1.5 billion mark worldwide on the back of an extra push over the U.S. Labor Day weekend.
According to theater tracking website Box Office Mojo, the superhero flick made $1.7 million in the U.S. and Canada last week. It remains unbeaten as the top film of 2012.
The blockbuster is based on a host of Marvel comic book characters and stars Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and Marc Ruffalo.
It was directed and co-written by Joss Whedon, creator of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer television series.
It is currently the third most successful film of all time, behind Avatar and Titanic, both directed by James Cameron.
