Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman dies at 49

  • Founding member of the thrash metal band Slayer, Jeff Hanneman, died on Thursday at Los Angeles at the age of 49. According to the Slayer spokeswoman, Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald, Hanneman died of liver failure. His wife Kathy was by his side during his death.

Earlier in 2011, Hanneman had nearly lost his arm and his life to what is believed to be a spider bite. The bite had been ignored by Hanneman for long and became a major concern. It is believed that the spider bite contributed to a rare ‘flesh eating disease’ which may have led to the liver failure which ended his life. Neither an autopsy nor a funeral has been arranged yet.

Hanneman co-founded Slayers, the pioneering thrash metal band in Huntington Beach, California in 1982. His death has been mourned by fans on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks. The Slayer website said "Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)."
