Signed Beatles album fetches $290,000 at auction
April 2 , 2013
A signed copy of The Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was sold for $290,000 at an auction in the United States on Monday.
The selling price surpassed the $30,000 originally set for the rare LP.
It was purchased by an unnamed buyer from the Midwest.
The UK Parlophone copy of the records includes a high gloss cover and vinyl gatefold sleeve and was autographed by all four Beatles around the time of its release in June 1967.
Speaking before the sale by the Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, Beatles expert Perry Cox said: "With my being thoroughly immersed in Beatles collectibles for over 30 years, it takes something extraordinarily special to excite me, but I consider this to be one of the top two items of Beatles memorabilia I've ever seen - the other being a signed copy of Meet The Beatles."
The previous record for a signed Beatles album cover was for the 1964 album Meet the Beatles, which sold for $150,000 in 2011.
