Pussy Riot Members to Appeal Conviction

  • Lawyers representing the jailed Pussy Riot bandmates have confirmed they will be appealing the women's hooliganism convictions.

After serving close to half of a two-year sentence, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were found guilty of organizing a protest concert in a city church. And Lawyer Irini Khurnova has revealed that she hopes to present the appeal to the Russian Supreme Court based on the argument that the verdict was "illegal".

No date has yet been set for the appeal.

Two members of the group evaded capture and are thought to have gone into hiding before the rest were caught by security guards whereas the third member of the group, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was convicted for her part in the gig, but her sentence was suspended last October and she walked free.

Film and music industry figures worldwide, including Madonna, have supported Pussy Riot, appealing to President Vladamir Putin to secure their release.
