April 30 , 2015
The controversy over the freedom of expression award for the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has escalated after over two dozen writers joined a protest against the award given by the literary organization PEN America.
In a letter, the writers including Lorrie Moore and Joyce Carol Oates have spoken against what they consider to be a “reward” for the magazine's controversial cartoons.
The letter also condemns the murder of Hebdo staffers by two Islamist gunmen.
