Legendary US singer Ben E. King, best known for 'Stand By Me', dies at 76

American singer Ben E. King, best remembered for his iconic number ‘Stand By Me’, has died aged 76.
The legendary R&B and soul singer began his career with 'The Drifters' in the 1950s, and sang hits like ‘There Goes My Baby’.
He then went solo and his song ‘Stand By Me’ reached the top five in the US charts in 1961. His other hits included 'Amor' and 'Don't Play That Song (You Lied)'.
In a tribute on Facebook, musician Gary US Bonds described King as one of the “sweetest, gentlest and [most] gifted souls" he had ever known.
