Legendary actor Omar Sharif, star of 'Lawrence of Arabia', dies aged 83

  • Legendary actor Omar Sharif, known for his roles in films such as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘Doctor Zhivago’, has died. He was 83.

    His portrayal of Sherif Ali in the 1962 classic ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ fetched him an Oscar nomination and two Golden Globe awards.

    Three years later, he was awarded another Golden Globe for 'Doctor Zhivago'.

    Born in Egypt, Omar Sharif worked in his family business before moving to London, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. 

    He made his Egyptian film debut in 1954 in ‘Siraa Fil-Wadi’, and became a major star in the Arab world.
