Justin Bieber's Anne Frank comments spark controversy

  • Canadian pop superstar Justin Bieber has sparked controversy after leaving a message in the guestbook at the Anne Frank Museum, saying he hoped the Holocaust victim "would have been a belieber".

Bieber wrote on Saturday: "Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber."

The Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam later posted details about the visit on its Facebook page, leading to a series of accusations over Bieber's insensitivity.

His fans, known as 'beliebers', have defended the 19-year-old’s comments while a museum spokesperson has said that there was nothing offensive in Bieber's remarks.

Anne Frank, who died aged 15 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945, is one of the most well known Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

Her diary, published in 1947, highlights the plight she and her family faced while in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
