Folk singer Richie Havens dies at 72

  • Iconic folk singer Richie Havens died of a heart attack at the age of 72 on Monday. Havens, who opened the 1969 Woodstock rock festival, passed away at his home in Jersey City, New Jersey, according to his agent, Roots Agency.

    Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Havens was renowned for his unique guitar and singing style. His family said a public memorial would be announced at a later date.

    Havens released more than 25 albums and recently featured on the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's slavery-era western Django Unchained singing a version of Freedom.
