Dame Maggie Smith taken to hospital due to chest pains

  • Dame Maggie Smith was admitted into hospital last week after suffering from chest pains, according to a report in the Sunday Mirror on Sunday.

The British tabloid said the Downton Abbey actress was admitted on Friday after complaining of severe pains.

The 77-year-old, who stars as Violet Crawley in the period drama, was taken to a cardiac unit at London’s Wellington Hospital. She was discharged later that day after undergoing a series of tests.

A source told the newspaper "it was a big scare" for Smith.

The insider added it could impact Smith's future in Downton Abbey, saying that she would "have to think very carefully now about whether she stays in the show".

Smith has previously suffered from breast cancer. In 2009, she revealed that she thought about ending her career after going through chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
