Critically acclaimed American novelist EL Doctorow dies, aged 84

American writer EL Doctorow, acclaimed for novels such as Billy Bathgate and Ragtime, has died, aged 84. He was reportedly suffering from lung cancer.
He often wrote works of historical fiction, setting his fictional characters within actual events from American history. In a career spanning five decades, he published ten novels besides other works.
He won numerous awards including the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle award.
In a tribute, President Obama described Doctorow as one of America’s “greatest novelists”.
