Constable Art - The Lock - Sells For £22.4m
July 4 , 2012
The Lock, a work by John Constable, the English romantic painter was sold to a private collector at Christie’s in London for a record £22,441,250. British museums were unable to match the bid and fear that The Lock may now disappear from public view. The art was sent for auction by Spanish socialite and former Miss Spain Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza. The Lock is the fifth in a series of six paintings by Constable of the Suffolk Stour Valley and was finished in 1824. Constable is known to have exhibited the series between 1819 and 1825.
