Beyonce and Jay-Z Cuba visit questioned in U.S. Congress
April 8 , 2013
A visit to Cuba by American pop star Beyonce and her rapper husband Jay-Z has come under scrutiny due to a U.S. economic embargo with the island nation.
Two Republican members of Congress have asked for official information on whether the couple had permission from the U.S. government to travel there.
The stars celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in Havana this week.
"Cuba's tourism industry is wholly state-controlled; therefore, US dollars spent on Cuban tourism directly fund the machinery of oppression that brutally represses the Cuban people," wrote Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart, both members of Congress from Florida, in a letter to the U.S. Treasury Department
Americans are not allowed to visit Cuba and spend money there unless they have special permission from the government.
