Thanksgiving shopping banned in three states
November 12 , 2016
Thanksgiving shopping won't be creating a fuss in three New England states since shopping on both Christmas and Thanksgiving has been banned in Maine, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
All three states have "blue laws" that don't permit holiday shopping. Retail groups haven't been able to change the laws despite complaining that shoppers end up going to other states. However, residents said they're happy with this break and even some retailers who would be allowed to stay open prefer to stay closed.
"Thanksgiving is supposed to be about giving thanks for all you have," a Massachusetts man said. "I cringe to think what society is doing to itself."
Reports suggest that only 13 percent of people in the US prefer stores to stay open on Thanksgiving.
