Spain awards $3.4B to the masses
December 24 , 2013
Spain's "El Gordo (the fat one)" lottery spread holiday cheer and hard cash to the people in the nation during a four-hour-long televised marathon.
Residents of the towns of Mondragon and Leganes, who took about $738M of the total win, appeared to be the big winners. "I'm on cloud nine! I couldn't imagine something like this happening," an official ticket seller in Mondragon said. "We've been in the press for so many unpleasant reasons, and for something which brings such joy to happen here is a real support for the people."
Most of the prizes weren't that big but the lucky ones holding the first place prize will face taxes.
