Smartphones outsell basic handsets
August 16 , 2013
Smartphone sales have exceeded the sales of feature phones for the first time in the recent months. Smartphone sales are up by 46.5 percent from last year and the largest growth comes from Asia, Europe and Latin America.
Smartphones are devices that connect to the internet and have built-in apps. On the other hand, feature phone lack these functions and cost less.
Principal research analyst at Gartner, Anshul Gupta said "smartphones accounted for 51.8 percent of mobile phone sales in the second quarter of 2013, resulting in smartphones sales surpassing feature phone sales for the first time."
According to Andrew Milroy of a consulting firm, there will come a time when the sales of the feature phones would not be able to justify the money and effort spent in developing them.
