Retired goddesses in Nepal to receive pensions
January 15 , 2014
Transitioning from being a goddess to just a mortal could be hard. Hence, the Nepalese government has decided to start providing retired Kumaris with pensions equivalent to $160 a month.
Kumaris are worshipped as living goddesses but have to give up the title once they reach puberty.
"Although most of the Kumaris come from well-to-do families, they miss a vital period of their lives and often lag behind in our increasingly competitive society," an official said. Reports suggest that the government will also try to provide them with good education after they lose their statuses.
