'Low growth, unemployment are a threat to EU'

  • A senior European Central Bank (ECB) official has warned that low growth and unemployment are undermining the very foundations of the EU, according to media reports.

Benoit Coeure, who is a member of the ECB’s executive board, said the bank could do only so much to create lasting growth, and called upon governments to accelerate economic reforms.

The ECB launched an economic stimulus plan worth €1.1 trillion on Thursday.

Coeure said low growth and “entrenched unemployment” were weakening “the whole political foundation of the European project."
