India wants to hold new auction for coal mining licenses
September 2 , 2014
It has been reported that Narendra Modi government has told India’s Supreme Court that it seeks to hold a fresh auction for coal mining licenses, days after the court held all such licenses to be illegal.
Successive governments in New Delhi issued a total of 218 licenses for coal mining from 1993 to 2000 to government and private firms. But, the apex court has ruled that the licenses were issued without competitive bids and in a manner that was non-transparent and unfair.
