Greek parties form anti-austerity coalition

  • The far-left Syriza party has formed a ruling coalition with the Greek Independents, the right wing party, based on an anti-austerity agenda.

Together, the two parties have a comfortable majority in the new parliament.

Alexis Tsipras, the Syriza leader, has pledged to renegotiate the country’s bailout, which is worth 268 billion, to put an end to what he called Greece's “humiliation and pain”.

After Syriza's victory, the euro fell to $1.11 against the dollar, the lowest in over 11 years.
