France: Crackdown on Uber cab service after day-long protests
June 26 , 2015
The French interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve has ordered a ban on UberPOP, the low-cost app-based taxi service, following a day of protests by taxi drivers.
The minister described the car-sharing service as “illegal” and told authorities to act against it.
The nationwide protests turned violent at times. American singer Courtney Cobain’s taxi was ambushed, and she took to Twitter to express her displeasure.
Some cars had their windows smashed while others were overturned, and barriers were put up on key highways and roads across France.
