Florida family finds underwater gold
September 4 , 2013
A 65-year old man in Florida who has spent his life looking for treasure off the coast has made a major discovery along with his family.
The Schmitt family has found a 64 feet long gold chain, five gold coins as well as a gold ring. The treasure has been valued at $300,000 and the state of Florida is supposed to keep 20 percent of the finds in the museum.
The treasure is about 300 years old and was leftover from a Spanish ship that had been destroyed in 1715 in a hurricane. In fact, this area is named "Treasure Coast".
The family had only found one gold coin on labor day last year but the son had found a silver platter worth $25,000 in 2002. The find was three centuries old.
